The composer, conductor, teacher and patron of young musicians Krzysztof Penderecki is considered not only as one of the most distinguished personalities on the international classical music scene, but also as one of the most influential cultural ambassadors for his native country of Poland.

His oeuvre containing more than 100 works reflects a wide spectrum of genres, types and styles of European musical traditions and has additionally provided decisive impulses with its original approaches towards the avantgarde. His most successful major works such as the ‘St Luke Passion’, ‘The Devils of Loudon’, the ‘Polish Requiem’ and the ‘Seven Gates of Jerusalem’ now stand as a representation of Penderecki’s individual compositional style: an amalgam of deeply personal tonal visions and existing forms, styles and harmony.

The intensity of Penderecki’s compositional output has been equalled in a completely different field by his decade-long interest in his collection of trees. He has over the years created an arboretum with currently app. 1,700 species from all over the world in a park extending to almost 75 acres in his place of residence in Lusławice. As the composer once remarked: “Trees are more than a mere passion: they are my second profession”.

The society ‘MUSIC UNITES – International Krzysztof Penderecki Society e.V.’ supports and promotes the life work of the composer and conductor Penderecki from all possible aspects and implements a wide range of projects. In the face of current swingeing global cuts in public funding and the reduced potential for subsidies, ‘MUSIC UNITES’ has also undertaken the challenge of placing a new focus with its support for a musical world characterised by intercommunication and humanistic ideals. This support will focus on the patronage of highly gifted young musicians and additionally on tuition, research and encounters between internationally renowned professors and students. The meeting place and focal point for the numerous projects will not only be the 18th century country house surrounded by the composer’s arboretum but also ‘The European Penderecki Centre for Music’ which is currently undergoing construction on this site. Nature and music will thereby be blended to form a natural and concentrated entity in Lusławice.

‘MUSIC UNITES’ will focus on the following major tasks and initiatives:

  • Preservation and promotion of the lifework of Krzysztof Penderecki
  • Patronage of highly gifted international young musicians
  • Support for the Academy (The European Penderecki Centre for Music) and all academy projects (concerts, master classes, library, research, professors, etc.)

The society ‘MUSIC UNITES’, founded in 2009, will require regular financial support in the future to enable it to pursue its aims and implement its wide-ranging projects. Alongside the voluntary commitment of its members, the society is searching for new friends, patrons and sponsors. If you join our circle of friends, you can select one of several options of participation, permitting you to have a share in our unique project.
